Class diary

Short posts about the class's day, with photos, seen only by the families of that class. A child is in a photo only with the consent of the school and of their family, and the family withdraws it whenever it wants. No comments and no likes.

The pictures are from the demo, a school with made-up names, as the portal and the website are today, on a computer and a phone. The demo’s posts are words only: it has no photos of children.

Teacher · in the portal, on a computer or a phone

Writes what the class did today

  • Under “Class diary” they choose one of the classes they teach and write what the class did, up to 2,000 characters. No children’s names: every family of the class reads it.
  • They add up to 10 photos, JPEG, PNG or WebP. Each photo is saved again as a new picture, without the details a camera’s file carries, such as the location.
  • For each photo they mark which children are recognisable in it, or “Nobody”. Without that the photo is not added.
  • Only the children with both consents are offered. The others are listed underneath by name: if one of them is in the picture, the photo stays out of the diary. The server checks the same when the photo arrives.
  • Beside the form, “Who may be in a photo” says for each child of the class whether they have the consent, how it was given and when.
  • What they write stays a draft that only they see, until they press “Publish”. Then the parents of the class are notified, and the portal says how many.
  • A published post is never changed. They remove it whole, or one photo of it, and the photos are deleted.

Office · in the portal

Switches it on and keeps the consents

  • The diary stays off until the office switches it on in Settings. If it switches it off, families no longer see it; the posts stay, and come back if it is switched on again.
  • A child is in a photo only with two consents: the school’s, “Photos in daily reports” on the child’s record, and the family’s for the diary.
  • A consent given on paper is recorded with “Paper”. The portal first asks whether the signed form is there, and the child’s parents are notified that it was recorded.
  • With “Withdraw” it removes a child’s consent, after being asked: every photo with the child is hidden from everyone and deleted for good, and the child’s parents are told.
  • It writes in the diary of any class, and removes anyone’s post.
  • The Activity log keeps who published, who removed a post and who gave or withdrew a consent, without what the post said.

Parent · on the website

Reads what their child’s class did

  • On the “Class” tab they read the posts of their children’s classes, newest first, with the teacher’s name. The tab is there only where the school has switched the diary on.
  • They are notified of a new post: a line in Notifications, and on the phone if they have the app, without the post’s words.
  • The first time, they are asked for the consent for each of their children, in the words they give: that the other families of the class see the photos with their child in them, that these stay up to 6 months, and that a family can photograph its screen. “Not now” leaves it for later.
  • Without it their child is in no photo of the diary. They read the diary like everyone, and the photos in the child’s own report do not change.
  • They withdraw it whenever they want, in the same place, after being asked once: every photo with their child is hidden from everyone at once and deleted. They can withdraw it also when the other parent gave it or the school recorded it.
  • Photos open large, one at a time. They do not say which children are in them, and the website has no download button.

What each person gets

For the parent

They see the class’s day

What the whole class did, with photos, beside their own child’s report.

For the family

Photos of their child are their decision

They give the consent reading what it allows, withdraw it whenever they want, and are told if the other parent or the school changes it.

For the teacher

They know who may be in a photo before uploading

The list is beside the form, and a photo with a child who has no consent is not added.

For the office

The consents are in one place

By class: which child has it, whether a parent gave it or it came on paper, and when. The Activity log keeps who gave or withdrew it.

What it does not do

No comments and no likes
Families read. For something about their child, a parent writes to the school from Messages, where the school has switched that on.
It does not recognise faces
Which children are in a photo is marked by the teacher. NepiNest does not look at the picture: if a child is not marked, the photo is not checked for their consent.
It does not stop a photo of the screen
The website has no download button, but a family can photograph its screen. The consent says so.
It is not an album
Photos are deleted after 180 days and the words after 400. A family cannot download a month’s photos.
A post cannot be corrected
It is removed and written again, and the parents are notified of the new one.
Photos only, no video
A post has words and up to 10 photos.
The phone app does not show the diary
The version in the stores today does not show it. The notification reaches the phone, and the parent reads the diary and gives the consent on nepinest.com.

The demo opens on the class diary, in the browser: the teacher and the office in the portal, the parent on the website, where they are asked for the consent. It is a school of made-up children, yours alone, which deletes itself.
